FRONT / BACK

This zine is very close to my heart. I created it during the pandemic for a class project where I really relayed a lot of current issues women’s face in society today. The first three spreads touch on different elements and issues women face, with the last spread covering the solution and how empathy is really the only way women will stop being killed for who they are.

I never cried over a project before this one. This whole zine took me about 60 hours over the course of 3 days where I worked almost nonstop as a method of processing my own trauma. I used Procreate and Adobe Photoshop as the main programs for my designs. Enjoy.

01 - 02

The illustrations I did all in Procreate, and utilized Adobe Photoshop for the font, layout, and texture. I wanted the spreads to look like actual paper and give the zine more depth. Pages 1 and 2 relate to how assault can leave marks on the body that heal, but does even more damage on the mind and psyche which can take much more time and work to heal… and sometimes it doesn’t ever really heal.

03 - 04

A tribute to Nancy Sinatra’s Song, “Bang Bang” concerning domestic violence and the romanticization it often receives in the media, I wanted to show how often people come across concerning depictions of violence and still look away because it is disguised with pretty colors and lies.

05 - 06

Relating to the back cover and the construct of beauty standards, this is a depiction of how people don’t really know what beauty is because of how misconstrued it is in the media. When someone thinks a woman is beautiful, is it because of what society deems is beauty and what isn’t? How can people trust what they think when all women are beautiful and yet only some are told so because of beauty standards?

07 - 08

Exactly put, the cure to violence against women really is empathy. People are not going to make changes for others that they see as different, but once we realize that we are all the same and that everyone should be treated just as they would treat themselves… maybe this zine will no longer be so easily related to society today.
